What is braided yarn?
To be quite precise, braided yarn is not what I would call yarn. Rather, it’s a flawless rope used as yarn for craft activities. Because, as the name suggests, you can use it as yarn and you can use it as braid. What does it mean?
If you define it as yarn, you can knit, crochet and macramé (knot) with it. However, if you define it as cord, you can sew, braid, splice or use it as a decorative material. This versatility of uses means that you can make countless things with this super yarn!
What can I knit with braided yarn?
If you use braided yarn for knitting, you can make bags, rugs, poufs and various home decor creations.
If you knit a bag, the result is a looser bag with a weaker hold than if you had crocheted it. This is advantageous if you want a larger bag, such as a super beach bag. If you crochet it, the fabric will be looser and therefore lighter… For smaller bags, however, I recommend crocheting them instead.
If you knit a rug with the braid, you’ll also get a looser texture than your crocheted counterparts. This can be an advantage for rugs as they are easier to wash and roll. You can use several techniques for puff knitting. If you are making the whole puff yourself, you will have to knit round articles. It is important that you do not work from the bottom up or from the top down, but sideways. In this case, there is no need for multiplication and consumption, but you keep coming further and further in with the yarn and do not knit the entire length, thus forming the articles.
One important practicality to keep in mind, however, is that since braided yarn is a thick yarn, the filler is guaranteed to spill out through the small gaps if you don’t put it in a small bag or some kind of sewn holder, even an old pillowcase. Of course, you can also give an old, second-hand pouf a new look by wrapping it around a piece of stuffing. It’s guaranteed to brighten up a corner of your home and it’s a quick hit. 🙂
When it comes to home decor creations made with braid, the only limit is your creativity. For example, you can make a wind catcher for the bottom of a balcony door or window.
1. Work a long rectangle with a small number of stitches (at least the width of the door or window). You can also use lazy knitting or garter stitch.
2. Crochet or sew the long sides of the rectangle together. This gives you a long cylinder.
3. Fill the resulting cylinder or tube shape with sealant. Tip: put the stuffing in an old stocking, for example, that is no longer used and place it in the cylinder. This will prevent the sealant from dripping out of the windcatcher.
You can also make a wreath as described above, in which case you will have to sew or crochet the ends of the cylinder together. You’ll see, it fits perfectly into the look of a modern home! 🙂
Finally, let’s see the decorative cushion knitting. On a garter stitch, 2-4 stitches of twist is very impressive on a decorative cushion, even if you’re working with 3mm braid.
